Tar and Feather was inspired by growing up in Los Angeles near the La Brea tar pits and watching the oil bubbling up. ‘Nearby on the hills, I could also see the pump jacks working away pumping the oil and looking like mechanical birds pecking at the earth.’ Here one can see the symbolic conflict between man with its dependence on crude oil and nature which has become trapped by it.
