Mono Lake is a unique jewel, sheltered on the eastern side of the Sierras. Phalaropes journey all the way from South America to gorge upon the Alkali flies and brine shrimp that fill these rich waters. An important rest stop for many migrating bird species; it also shelters key nesting areas for the California Seagull. The fight to keep the lake from being drained by Los Angeles is an on-going struggle.
