African Wild Dogs, or Painted Dogs, are an important factor in sub-Saharan ecosystems and are the largest wild canines on the continent of Africa. They have the highest hunt-to-kill ratio of all African predators—a whopping 80%—and are one of the most colorfully patterned hunters, each one having very individual and identifiable markings, much like fingerprints. Recently, after a slow decline in numbers, through hardworking conservation efforts, including banding, tracking and anti-poaching efforts, they have begun to recover. Another very interesting fact: the pack will vote on a hunt by sneezing! Enough sneezes by the right members and the hunt is on! Who knew?
