Al and Diane Johnson of Rockport Texas own a ranch that borders on the Aransas Wildlife Refuge, the winter home of the endangered Whooping Crane. They offer internationally famous hospitality at “The Crane House,” for birders and conservationists to experience the cranes up close and personal. It’s an excellent place to be when the sun is rising across St. Charles Bay over the refuge, and the cranes oblige you with a flyover on their way to breakfast.
