Polar Bears represent all we stand to lose in a melting world. They also represent hope. When we help them, we help ourselves. Biologists estimate that polar bears evolved from brown bears sometime between 150,000 and 600,000 years ago. There is little fossil record for polar bears because they live mostly on ice, where there are few fossils. Their past is difficult to determine, but their future is unhappily predictable. Long-lived animals require populations of animals, not individuals, and decades or centuries to adapt to a changing climate. This is a bear for all time. The time is now.
