Like many species of fish, smallmouth bass are able to adjust their coloration and the vividness of their markings according to the clarity of the water and the type of habitat in which they happen to be swimming at any given time. For instance, I have caught them in cold, muddy water in which they had taken on a butter-yellow color with almost no patterned markings. But here I have depicted them feeding in very clear water above a rocky lake bed in which they can turn a bronze-brown with pronounced vertical barring.
