Crested ibises taking flight from the Shiroyone Senmaida rice terraces in Wajima, Japan where rice planting has begun. Noto, which has been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), suffered significant damage in the 2024 earthquake. As a symbol of recovery, crested ibises—once extinct in Japan—will be released in Noto in 2026 in an effort to restore the species. I hope to see these beautiful birds gracefully flying over the skies of Noto in the near future.
