The Northern Bald Ibis is a rare bird residing mostly in Morocco. Once throughout the Middle East, northern Africa and southern Europe, these birds declined to critically endangered status of approximately 200 birds due to over consumption by human. The population is starting to rebound and there are now reintroduced populations in Turkey, Spain, Austria, Italy, and Morocco. I was lucky to see a thriving reintroduced wild population of ibis in southern Spain. The colony had several nesting birds, and we saw them foraging in the neighboring fields. I was enraptured by their iridescent plumage shimmering in the light and their head plumes dancing with every movement. This bird is gorgeous and captivating.
