Although a common species in the UK, Tawny owls are often heard more than they are seen. I have always enjoyed the fact that nature can be nearby but still out of sight. My pencil study shows an owl hidden in an old oak tree, with small patches of moonlight catching the edge of its feathers and the texture of the bark. I used a range of pencils to get a high contrast between the shadows and highlights.
