The shore swimming crab (Charybdis japonica) and the barred knifejaw (Oplegnathus fasciatus) are both common native species in Japanese rocky shore areas. The knifejaw has a strong jaw and teeth, and feeds on sea urchins and shellfish. These crustaceans include juvenile swimming crabs as their favorite food. The shore swimming crab lives in rocky crevices, manmade structures, or sandy bottoms around rocky reefs, and feed on benthos and juvenile fish. The adult shore swimming crab is smaller than the blue crab and other swimming crabs but is very aggressive and often faces off against their predators.
