When I encountered this hawksbill sea turtle in the summer of 2024, it was being rehabilitated at Sea Turtle, Inc. in South Padre Island, TX. The organization protects sea turtles through medical care, education, and research. In 2021, when a sudden freeze in the Gulf of Mexico cold-stunned thousands of sea turtles, Sea Turtles, Inc. and community volunteers were able to save nearly 5,000 of them. Hawksbill sea turtles, like all species of sea turtles, are endangered. Threats include illegal hunting, vessel strikes, fishing gear hazards, and loss of nesting and foraging habitats due to climate change and pollution.
