A midsized, golden coloured owl with a white, heart shaped face, the barn owl has been assessed as endangered since before the Endangered Species Act took effect in 2008. Barn owls live in areas of open farmland, nesting in barns, abandoned buildings and natural cavities in trees and cliff faces where winter temperatures are not too severe. In Ontario, the Great Lakes provide a temperate zone where barn owls can be found near grasslands and farmlands within 50 km. Due to loss of habitat caused by urbanization and changes in agricultural practices there are fewer than five nesting pairs in Ontario.
