Back in the 90's I was doing a lot of diving in the Monterey Bay area along with a good friend and fellow firefighter Randy White in an area called the Red Triangle, estimated to have 30% of all Great White attacks in all of the Pacific. In all our years of diving in these waters we had never encountered a Great White Shark, until the one time I missed a dive with Randy at the Monterey Canyon—one of the deepest submarine canyons on the west coast. As Randy turned to swim back to the kelp, his partner pointed out a 15-foot Great White slowly swimming directly at him and circling before disappearing into the abyss.
