"Cloud waves rise in the sea of heaven. The moon is a boat that rows till in hides in a forest of stars." Kakinomotono Hitomaro This work, "The Ancient Poetry," depicts wolves on a paulownia tree with burnt surface respectively, howling as they face each other. The written text is a poem read by Kakinomotono Hitomaro, a representative poet of the Asuka period, late 6th century, which is included in Japan’s oldest poetry collection, "Manyoshu." The engraved annual rings remind me of the moon and stars, and of the howls of wolves echoing the world of poetry.
