The Cuban Macaw, (Ara tricolor), is extinct since about 1855. This little Macaw disappeared because of over-hunting for food, habitat destruction and taking the chicks from the nest as pets. The species is known from skins, feathers and subfossil remains. To my big surprise a friend of mine has found a mounted dermoplasty of an Ara tricolor specimen in a little museum of a small town in Germany, (Heilbad Heiligenstadt). This specimen with its proportions and colour as well as its next relative, the Scarlet Macaw, (Ara macao), in flying position, were the reference images of my drawing.
