The Spirit Bear, or Kermode bear, is a unique subspecies of Black Bear that lives in the central and North coast regions of the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. It is an important animal to the Kitasoo/Xai'Xais and Gitga'at people that live in this area. Its uniqueness and rarity have made it a symbol in both culture, and conservation. The forest where the Spirit Bear lives is one of the largest intact temperate rainforests in the world, supporting areas of old growth with trees that can be up to 1,000 years old. Campaigns and agreements have resulted in 85% of the Great Bear Rainforest being protected, with work continuing to help protect this diverse and delicate ecosystem.
