I’ve painted Peregrines before, I’ve painted Rock Doves before, but I’ve never painted a gargoyle before. This one was patterned after memories of an Indonesian woodcarving my parents own that depicts the Hindu character Garuda (a big, anthropomorphic bird of prey), biting the head off of a turtle. I shifted the creation of that piece westward, imagining a Christian European stone sculpture of a demon engaged in the same activity.
