Pelicans fly in formation and survey the shoreline of California with military precision, skimming the tops of the waves and passing overhead like a group of Air Force bombers. I came across this squadron on a plein air painting trip to the wild, remote coastline north of Fort Bragg. Coming in for a landing, they settled in for a break from their patrolling just long enough for me to sketch and photograph them in preparation for this studio painting.
