Amanita muscaria, aka fly agaric is familiar to most people as the classic toadstool. It is perhaps the most illustrated mushroom in the world. Worldwide there are many different varieties of amanita muscaria resulting from 3 main groups based on geographical locations, Eurasian, Eurasian Subalpine and North American. Here in North America, there are at least 8 different varieties. It is a very important mushroom because it is an ectomycorrhiza fungi that forms a symbiotic relationship with the roots of various tree species that is mutually beneficial.
