As the first Arizona monsoon storms break over the Sky Islands, a fledgling Thick-billed Parrot takes the first flight. A devoted parent is alongside to guide the landing in the native Chiricahua pine. Thick-billed parrots are a migratory Psittacine species, following their favorite food sources, with a few populations hanging on in the high Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. They have been extirpated in the US state of Arizona but have a long history of human interference: from burials of cherished birds found in archeological sites in the northern mountains of Arizona, to modern, (failed), attempt at re-introduction. This artwork expresses the hope that someday they will be safe enough to re-colonize their range in Arizona.
