My inspiration for this painting was a beautiful photo of the Mute Swan gracefully gliding past a background of reeds in Holland. The Mute Swan, Cygnus olor, is a large white waterfowl with an orange beak bordered in black and derives it's name 'mute' from being less vocal than other swan species. In Holland, the Mute Swan is protected by the Dutch Nature Conservation Act. Although swans are not native to Holland, they have become a major part of Dutch culture. Holland is home to some of the most famous swan attractions in the world including Keukenhof Gardens and the Palace of the Brabant.
