British Columbia’s Northern Spotted Owl is one of the most endangered species in Canada. Their old growth forest habitat was drastically reduced from years of logging. With competition from non-native barred owls their numbers in the wild are now in single digits. The province has since created wildlife habitat areas for these rare owls and a captive breeding program was founded in 2007 to restore their numbers. The first captive birds were released into the wild in 2022. Spotted owls have deep black eyes that seem to look into your soul. They are one of my favorite drawing subjects.
