An Orangutan is depicted with high detail on the face. The background is kept simple to focus the viewers’ attention on the subtle sideways glance of the eye. One wonders what the ape is thinking at this moment. I was moved to paint this piece after observing a zoo animal. This individual was perched on top of its artificial tree in the dimly lit interior space and seemed to be lost in thought. It looked bored, and melancholy, as if it wanted to be somewhere else.
