This seal’s inquiring look, originally captured in a photo by Ron Niebrugge, held my interest as I painted his portrait. Only after finishing the painting, onboard Alaska Airlines departing Boston, did I learn the seal’s name and story. A serendipitous seat assignment introduced me to a veterinarian also on the flight, who knew Snapper. Snapper was born at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. At the age of four, Snapper was transferred to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. For nearly 30 years, he participated in Harbor Seal research. He also sired four offspring. Snapper was loved by many.
