I met Junior, a young Western Lowland Gorilla, when I was a zookeeper trainee at the Jersey Zoo, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, decades ago. Although he was lying in the hay in his holding area, I imagined him lying in the grass gazing up at the clouds. The quiet, peaceful, mostly vegetarian western lowland gorillas are native to the lowland forests of central and west Africa. They are critically endangered due to hunting, habitat destruction, and even the Ebola virus, in some parts of their range.
