The Varied Thrush is a common winter resident where I live near the Oregon Coast. In 2022 however, they did not appear for their annual visit. Sadly, they are listed as a "common bird in steep decline" so painting this piece helped to fill that void. I love to hear their reedy call wafting through the mature forest surrounding my home and enjoy seeing them in berry bushes or on the ground seeking food beneath old leaves. Occasionally, they move to higher perches to sing or move between foraging sites. Now, in the spring of 2023, I am very happy to report that we have had many of these beautiful birds in our surrounding forest and yard over the winter. Even though this species is still at risk, it was most encouraging to enjoy their presence once again.
