‘Harriet’ and ‘M15’ are a Bald Eagle pair that have nested near my home for over a decade. This nesting season was particularly dramatic as Hurricane Ian destroyed their nest. The couple rebuilt it and hatched two eaglets in record time. 2023 would be a success! Until tragedy struck: Harriet flew out one morning and never returned. She must have died accidentally. We feared M15 would abandon the nest, but he single-handedly fed and protected his eaglets until they fledged. This painting depicts their last evening together, watching the setting sun with the eaglets safe and warm in the nest.
