Louie was born at a Miami breeder’s compound. Taken from his mother as an infant, his youth was spent performing in live stage shows at a Los Angeles tourist attraction. Louie appeared in the Dr. Doolittle movie with Eddie Murphy. At age 9, Louie, too large and strong for the trainers to handle, was relinquished to the Center for Great Apes’ sanctuary in 2005 and is enjoying his right to life and safety. Orangutans, among our closest relatives, are known for their high intelligence and sensitivity. Everyone has a story, whether used for entertainment, victimized by the exotic pet trade, or facing perils in the wild. Their stories are linked with our own, filled with both loss and hope.
