In 2022 much of the southwest coast of Florida was devastated by Hurricane Ian, including many of the barrier islands. There was great loss of habitat for many species, and one of the most noticeable things was that it took time for many of the birds to return. I have often painted the shorebirds on these barrier islands and was happy to see the return of the great egrets, among many others. Here one is feeding in the shallows on Gasparilla Island. Much of the foliage is gone, but a branch remains. In the distance is the old railroad trestle, which stands strong, still protecting many of the species on which the birds as well as dolphins, feed.
