From January to April, you will find humpback whales breeding and calving in the warm tropical waters of Hawaii. Most frolic off the coast of Maui. A common site is to find bottlenose dolphins interacting with humpback whales. This painting depicts one of those interactions. The third whale in the painting is referred to as the escort. He is enjoying being the loan suitor to the female but that is sure to change as other males become aware and challenge his position. These challenges usually turn into spectacular brawls that are very rarely fatal.
