Every year, on a tiny human-made island in a small human-made lake in the midst of a vast expanse of human-made suburbia, dozens of herons and egrets crowd together in a bird-made rookery. As I was watching two Great Blue Heron nestlings idly exploring their nest, they suddenly began to dance around excitedly. I put my binoculars aside to see the bigger picture and discovered that one of their parents had just returned and was standing on a nearby branch watching the commotion.
