God has blessed me with numerous beach-combing and Turtle viewing experiences worldwide; humans have scarred most of them. From finding adult carcasses tangled in fishing netting, noticing Dog or bicycle tire tracks leading to plundered nests, and with light pollution luring them away from the ocean, I’ve witnessed hatchlings trampled under tourist’s feet - it’s hard to believe any survive! This painting recalls an arribada in Costa Rica where groups of people hauled away thousands of harvested eggs, yet focuses on a moment when two Olive Ridley sea turtles got away and made it to the safety of the Pacific.
