Roy is a Chimp rescued from Sudan as a baby, where he had been confined to a 2ft by 2ft steel cage since birth. He is now a gregarious member of the expanding troop at Ol Pejeta Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. I met and photographed Roy during a privileged insider tour during feeding and was captivated by his serene, slightly judgmental expressions and lazy but assertive hand movements. The piece was started wet on wet with many, may layers of glazing to build up the tinted dark flesh base before detailed inking and overpainting, wet on dry, and finally finished off with gouache for the lighter hairs and some highlighting on the leathery skin wrinkles with aquarelle pencils using pinks, blues grays and white.
