Moneypenny was a Secretary Bird rescued from the Maasai Mara in 2015. She had a leg so badly mutilated it had to be amputated, but she lived quite happily with a bamboo prosthesis made by Kenya Bird Of Prey Trust co-founder Simon Thomsett. Sadly, she got her prosthetic limb tangled during a cold winter’s night and was found frozen to death. I used a photo to create this memorial portrait. The cerulean blue gouache background was painted first, then I proceeded with over a hundred and fifty hours of painstaking feather painting, leaving white feathers as plain paper by painted reverse space around each quill and overpainting each grey feather with an extremely fine brush for barbule lines.
