Although long-billed dowitchers are not considered a species of concern, their habitat is threatened by drought - caused by heat waves - which decreases their food resources, spring heat waves affect the young in the nest, and city development. I saw these dowitchers, part of a large flock, in a nearby flooded pasture. Identification is challenging for the most experienced birders. It was wonderful to see this level of water due to adequate spring rains. They totally ignored me as I stood on the bank above, gathering reference, enjoying the day, and their company. I am inspired and relieved to see any species thriving in an intact environment.
