The melodious, cascading song of the Canyon Wren can be heard echoing sweetly throughout the canyons of the desert southwest. These agile, active birds can be seen foraging among the cliffs and rocks using their long, slender bills to probe the cracks and crevices for insects. On a Grand Canyon rafting trip, up Blacktail Canyon playing my cedar flute, and listening to the rich echoes return, I was joined by a Canyon Wren singing back to me. For 15 minutes the Wren and I shared a communion of canyon and music, of arid air and ancient cliffs. I still hear that tiny Wren in my dreams.
