As all parents know, giving birth and those first months in a newborn’s life is a profoundly intense and memorable time. When they give birth, humpback whales help their newborn calves take their first breaths of fresh sea air at the surface. As the young whales orient themselves in their new ocean world as air breathing mammals, their adaptations to excel in their environment are incredible.
