The American Alligator was once a federally endangered species. It neared extinction as the demand for hides and uncontrolled hunting had almost wiped out the species. Fortunately, this is one of the great conservation success stories. Under the Endangered Species Act, hunting was prohibited, and Alligator habitat was protected. The species has since made a dramatic recovery and the Alligator was removed from the endangered species list in 1987.
