This painting was done from memory; of seeing Lotus under the waters of a flooded creek where I live. I saw perfect, open, white flowers two feet below the water. The next day, the flowers were already breaking through the surface. Rich nutrients in the mud allowed the fast growth the plant needed. Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh wrote: “The secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not to run away from it.” To have the Lotus we must acknowledge that we need mud for it to grow. If you have a muddy, flooded life right now, maybe the bloom is actually there, just waiting on a little growth to break through to the sun.
