Bam Bam was born at a breeder’s facility in Florida and taken from his mother as an infant and sold to a California trainer for work in entertainment. At six, after several seasons on a soap opera, Bam Bam became too strong to work safely and was ready for retirement. He was relinquished to the Center for Great Apes Sanctuary in 2005 and was allowed to live as an orangutan. Individuals like Bam Bam have the right to life and freedom from harm. Everyone has a story, whether used for experimentation or entertainment, victimized by the exotic pet trade, or facing increasing perils in the wild. Their stories are inextricably linked with our own, and like ours, are filled with both loss and hope.
