A common interpretation of Botticelli's masterpiece, "Birth of Venus" is that the goddess reappears to herald a new age of love and enlightenment after the prolonged unrest of the Middle Ages. Sadly, over 500 years later, we are still trying to pull out of the darkness of war and ignorance, only now we are also in the midst of a human-caused environmental crisis of pollution, climate change, and mass extinction. It is time for a new prayer, for the goddess to return and bring enlightenment for healing our environment. In this self-portrait, I am surrounded by a critically endangered species, the Hawaiian Monk Seal.
