Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered. They are slightly smaller and have a brown-grey coat than other subspecies of gorillas. They also have a more pronounced brow ridge. Because of poaching and disease, gorilla numbers have declined 60% over the last 20-25 years. Scientists say even if all the threats to them were removed, it would still take some 75 years for the gorilla population to recover. I was fascinated by this Silverback when I was reaching him - he seemed deep in thought. His profile and gaze were all I needed in the painting to show his power, strength, and beauty.
