Sometimes after doing many paintings using “earth tones” I crave COLOR. When searching for the subject of my next piece, I came across the Southern Ground Hornbill. I loved his impressive bill, black plumage, long lashes and red throat. The turquoise was the perfect backdrop for this magnificent bird. One of the best parts of being a wildlife artist is creating awareness of threatened and endangered species. The Southern Ground Hornbill, like many hornbill species, is considered threatened. Their numbers have declined due mainly to habitat destruction, cultural beliefs, and other factors.
