This study depicts a tiger, quiet and pensive, watching a Luna moth flit past. The two subjects are in the foreground to direct our attention to them and the story. The background jungle is left dark and undefined. The single light coming in from the side not only brings out the beautiful colors of the animal, but also suggests a deeper subliminal message in which the light of life may be fading, and this powerful predator may be seen no more, as to be extinct. The tiger may be watching the Luna moth, and in sadness, be thinking how fleeting life is. This study is one of several I am creating in preparation for series of large oil paintings along the same theme.
