Lions are classified as vulnerable with decreasing populations, but in West Africa, where they have vanished from over 95% of their historic region, they are critically endangered. It is estimated that only 20,000 lions remain in the wild. Habitat loss, poaching for the illegal wildlife trade ( lion bones are sold as tiger parts ), disease and climate change all play a part in the loss of 90% of lion populations in the last century.
