Lionfish or butterfly cod are extremely beautiful, however, looks can be deceiving ! Their very long spines are covered with venomous mucus and are used for protection and for hunting prey. The lionfish is one of the most successful survivors on the reef as they have no natural predators and in some parts of the world their numbers have exploded, making them a pest.
