For everyone, 2020 was a stressful year. Here in California we had the elections, the pandemic and terrible wildfires. I live in Santa Cruz where over 800 homes were lost to fire. Although our home escaped the fires, evidence of the disaster is abundant. Driving up highway one in the weeks after the fire, trees were still smoldering in the blackened fields. The toll on wildlife already stressed from years of drought is hard to estimate. I observed this Heron picking it's way through the ashes. Perhaps it is looking for a cooked gopher or some other toasted treat. It was encouraging to see that not everything is lost.
