Mishaya is a collaborative work between myself, and my friend and photographer Sue Custance. Sue went on the trek of a lifetime into the South Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, where she had the opportunity to meet the Mishaya gorilla group. Mishaya was a sub-ordinate silverback, who led an uprising that ended in a split from the Nshongi Gorilla Group. He fled with close to eight other gorillas in search of greener pastures in the Rushaga area of the Bwindi forest. Mishaya’s alert yet relaxed posture in this painting, clearly illustrates his contentment and dominant position in his newly formed group. I chose to do a large format, mixed media painting for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to engage the viewer and give a sense of the monumentality of the subject. And secondly, I like complex surfaces and enjoy manipulating layers and textures throughout the painting process.
