Polar bears can only survive where the frozen ocean surface is present long enough to let them gain weight from their main food source - seals. When the ice becomes too thin, it melts too soon in the spring; killing mother and cubs in their dens. If it freezes too late in the fall, there is nothing polar bears can do. In my painting I've put the cub off-balance with the small patch of snow crowded in the lower right corner, as well as limiting the space around him.
