While in Africa a couple of years ago, we stayed at a camp right on the Mara River. At night, loud calls from the river below, kept us awake. As it turned out, the hippos were the creatures making all of the noise, beautiful and a little scary! I recorded the sounds every night, and I revisit those recordings every once in a while. The hippos in the painting were in the river right outside of our tent. I finished this piece, ironically enough, on Mother's Day, so that explains the title.
